15th Biennial Stonewall Jackson Symposium - Registration Closed

Registrattion for the Fifteenth Biennial Stonewall Jackson Symposium is now closed.

Virginia Military Institute superintendent emeritus Lt. Gen. John W. Knapp ’54 will deliver the opening address at the 15th Biennial Stonewall Jackson Symposium, sponsored by the Stonewall Jackson House. Knapp’s remarks, which are FREE and open to the public, will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 23, in Jackson Memorial Hall.

Knapp’s address, titled “Jackson the Professor … peculiarly our own,” will reflect upon the years in which Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson taught at VMI. While teaching natural and experimental philosophy, Jackson was known to cadets as a demanding and sometimes eccentric instructor, whom some cadets unkindly nicknamed “Tom Fool.” His demanding nature, however, led to later success on the battlefield.

In his remarks, Knapp will explore the mentoring relationships that Jackson developed during the 10-year period of 1851 to 1861 when he taught at VMI, and also discuss how educational trends of the mid-19th century may have influenced Jackson.
