Instructor in Civil Engineering (non-tenure track)

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department invites applications for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track position in the structures area of Civil Engineering. The position is renewable beyond the first year at the Institute’s discretion.  Candidates must have excellent teaching and communication skills.  Industry experience and professional registration are preferred.  The appointment begins 1 August 2018. 

The department is ABET accredited in Civil Engineering, and VMI is a public, four-year undergraduate military college for men and women (1700 students).  All 1700 students live on campus and about 50% commission in the US Armed Forces.  Faculty wear uniforms, but no prior service is required.  Lexington, population 7,000, is also home to Washington and Lee University and offers a stimulating cultural atmosphere in a pleasant, rural setting.   

The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses each semester at various undergraduate levels and advise/supervise students.  Engagement in scholarly activity will not be required.  Performance is evaluated on the basis of teaching and cadet development.  More information about VMI can be found at, and a description of the academic program and faculty expectations can be viewed in the VMI Faculty Handbook.
